This is a role within the Subscriber Product Engineering Team at AT&T. The SPE team has responsibility for all technology solutions related to devices utilized on our RAN network. This includes technical solution creation, test procedures, long term forecasting, lab testing hardware and software, and alignment of device strategy with network plans and AT&T’s long term needs.
R&D and Test Lab Coordinator Role
This role involves managing the SPE lab facilities located in Redmond, WA.These facilities are used by a number of different parties internal and external to AT&T.This includes – but is not limited to – modem chip manufacturers, handset or wireless device manufacturers, various AT&T engineering teams, and IoT module makers.The lab and testing hardware within are designed to facilitate the testing of a diverse set of functionalities.
The role will require that the successful candidate be able to understand, extrapolate from, and utilize a variety of technical requirements to enhance or update the lab.This expertise will allow them to strategically optimize the long term planning for software and hardware acquisitions to support our UE testing facilities.For example, as new technical requirements are identified, these requirements will be converted to actionable test cases.The incumbent must be able to understand the impacts and tactical aspects of these test cases to translate them into future lab impacts and needs.The facets to consider are software upgrades, hardware acquisition, and budgeting impacts.
The candidate shall also be expected to participate in all technology discussions relative to this area of expertise and the solutions he’s created.The candidate shall provide expert level guidance on all facets of UE testing involving specialized scripts and hardware equipment, including the ability to draw conclusions and consult on additional solutions as needed.
Education
At least a Bachelors degree in an approved field from an accredited university. Experience: With a Ph.D. in an approved field from an accredited university should have a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or with a Masters degree in an approved field from an accredited university a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or with a Bachelors degree in an approved field from an accredited university a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.

Skills required include advanced engineering, analytical, integration experience, and demonstrated ability to support complex cross organizational technical efforts is required. Proven ability to quickly learn new technologies, along with the ability to grasp architecture and business ramifications is required.
The candidate will need strong interpersonal skills to properly interact with all of the vendors and engineers who make use of the testing facilities. Resource contention is a daily occurrence as demand for lab resources outstrips actual capacity frequently. The successful candidate will need to be able to problem solve and manage expectations appropriately. They will also need strong organizational skills as scheduling and arbitration of that schedule is key.
Further, the candidate should demonstrate excellent communication skills especially with respect to defining/describing solutions at architecture or design level across many components and strong analytical and problem solving skills. Strong preference for candidates who are open to new technologies, ideas and concepts, driven by challenges and opportunities, proactively stay current with recent technologies and industry trends, and are open to explore new tools and concept to solve business problems.
Detailed knowledge of AT&T’s Radio Access Network, LTE, 3G, Wi-Fi transmission technology, Handset feature and functionality, technology related to fixed wireless communication is a must. Technical understanding of Location Services, GPS, GLONASS, 911 Services, Unlicensed Spectrum, 5G technologies would be an asset.
Previous experience with our Lab Operations team, and the hardware providers into our labs would be very beneficial (Anritsu, Spirent, Roade & Schwartz, Keysight, and Anite)
Relocation Support
The role requires that the employee be local to the lab facilities. For the right candidate, a lump sum amount of funding can be provided to offset some of the cost of relocation to the Washington area.
