Job Summary: Serves as Dispensing Optician in the Optical Shop. Selects, adjusts, measures, and makes minor frame repairs and adjustments. May direct the activities of several associates in the performance of similar duties. Duties and Responsibilities: Possession of a license or certification as required by the local state authority. - Reads prescriptions for lens specifications from patrons requiring eye glasses. Assists patrons in selecting frames from a wide variety of styles and colors. Makes recommendations to patrons as to correct size and fit based on facial structure, color of lenses, tinted or untinted. Forwards selected frames with prescription order form for lenses to manufacturer for processing. - Receives completed items from authorized personnel. Checks to ensure work done meets required specifications. May be required to notify patron of receipt of merchandise. - Fits patron with finished product and makes adjustments to frame as necessary. If discrepancies are noted, notifies supervisor and returns merchandise to manufacturer for replacement, correction, etc. Also, makes minor repairs to frames such as replacing screws realigning and mounting lenses. - Is responsible for cash fund. Collects and accounts for cash received from patrons. Balances daily sales using Salesperson's Daily Cash Report (SS/120). Picks up and turns in money bag with change fund daily. - Maintains direct liaison with manufacturer in carrying out above duties. - Exercises tact, good manners and courtesy when serving and assisting customers. This is expressed by tactfully responding to patron inquiries and assisting patrons in a prompt and friendly manner. May be assigned to perform the following: - Preparation of Purchase Order Worksheet with description of items, quantity and unit price for shop supplies. Ensures adequate supply of stock is maintained at all times. - Establishment of work schedules, preparation of work performance reviews, approving leave, maintaining associates time cards, and resolving associates complaints. - Conducting monthly inventory with the assistance of other Optical Dispensers. - Works under the general supervision of a designated supervisor. Performs day-to-day assignments independently, exercising judgment, initiative and tact in dealing with customers. Completed work is reviewed in terms of patron satisfaction and efficiency of operations. - Performs other related duties as assigned GENERAL EXPERIENCE: One year responsible experience in clerical, office or retail sales store work of any kind which the applicant has demonstrated the ability to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: 1 year of academic study above the high school level may be substituted for 9 months of experience, up to a maximum of a 4 year bachelor's degree for 3 years of general experience. For each year of general experience, one year of course work that includes an average of six semester hours a year in ophthalmic dispensing. AND SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: one year of responsible experience which provided a knowledge of optical dispensing duties such as reading prescription for lens specifications, recommending frames based on correct size, fit, facial structure, color of frames and lenses; performed minor repairs on frames. Possession of a license or certification as required by the local state authority.
